ABOUT
Mary Beth Chau is the CEO and Co-founder of Materio, an innovative software platform revolutionizing the way interior design teams collaborate with build teams, enhancing efficiency and communication for both design and design-build firms. After beginning her career at Grimshaw, Mary Beth dove into the exhilarating chaos of startup life, honing her ability to turn complex problems into elegantly designed user experiences. Her journey from graphic design to UX was sparked by her relentless curiosity and passion for understanding what makes people tick.
In 2020, alongside her husband Thomas, Mary Beth co-founded Materio after experiencing a lengthy and frustrating renovation on their NYC apartment. Convinced there had to be a better way to manage design projects efficiently, they created Materio to blend their mutual love for design, technology, and solving real-world challenges. With nearly five years dedicated to enhancing design workflows behind the scenes, Mary Beth has now launched Materio Atelier—a vibrant interior design firm fueled by creativity, empathy, and the very software she helped create.
Mary Beth loves color, texture, and pattern—but above all, she loves designing experiences. She believes homes and spaces should be designed personally and specifically for the people who live in them. Applying the principles of User Experience design to interior spaces, she carefully studies how people interact within their environments to create designs that truly match their lifestyle and functional needs, not just aesthetic preferences.
As both a designer and a mom, Mary Beth approaches each project with warmth, clarity, and an unapologetic drive to push boundaries. Motherhood transformed her perspective profoundly, instilling a deeper appreciation for spaces that nurture, inspire, and function effortlessly. Through Materio Atelier, she combines her software insights with hands-on design expertise, ensuring every project is not only beautifully realized but meticulously streamlined.
Mary Beth’s style is approachable, her solutions bold, and her enthusiasm infectious. Whether collaborating with clients or iterating on new software features, her goal remains the same: to elevate how we live, work, and connect in our spaces.
